Itinerary
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
We start at the serene Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. We begin by marveling at the towering, 15 meters (49 feet) tall Otorii Gate at the main entrance. After showing you the elegant, traditional step-by-step self-purification at the water fountain, your guide will lead you to the Main Hall of Worship. You will learn the proper Shinto sequence of bowing and clapping to confidently offer your prayers for love, relationship harmony, or family connections.
We will stop by the Tai-Mikuji basket “pool”, where you can pick up a small bamboo rod and “fish” out of the wooden pool your very own matchmaking or well-being fortune wrapped in a beautifully crafted red or pink wooden fish.
Next, we step into the iconic Ema Tunnel, a quiet, wooden archway beautifully crowded with thousands of prayer plaques. Right after the tunnel, we will pay our respects to the two massive, 500-year-old Goshinboku (Sacred Zelkova Trees).
Before wrapping up our tour, we will proceed to the sacred purification stream to experience Hitogata Nagashi. Your guide will show you how to rub a human-shaped paper doll over your chest and shoulders, breathe onto it to transfer negative energy, and watch it dissolve in the sacred stream to wash away bad luck.
Historic Old Town & Kurazukuri Street
We step into the true heart of Little Edo on the legendary Kurazukuri Street. Walking down this road feels like stepping right into a historic painting! The street is lined with stunning, double-story merchant shops built with thick, fireproof clay walls and beautiful black plaster coatings. These buildings are still active, bustling merchant shops. As we wander past, your guide will point out unique traditional craft workshops, active street food eateries, and cozy local cafes, explaining how wealthy merchants rebuilt their storefronts in this incredibly expensive style after the great fire of 1893.
Time Bell Tower (Toki no Kane)
We arrive beneath the famous symbol of Kawagoe: Toki no Kane (The Time Bell Tower). Standing proud at 16 meters (52 feet) tall, this magnificent wooden tower has stood over the historic district since the early 1600s. Rebuilt for the fourth time after the Great Fire of 1893, the bell still rings today, just as it did in the samurai era when local residents relied on its chime to schedule their working days. This beautiful tower is the perfect photo spot!
Kumano Shrine
Next, we take a short, pleasant walk to Kumano Shrine, a vibrant Shinto shrine dedicated to warding off evil spirits and bringing happy relationships. It is home to the mythical three-legged crow, Yatagarasu, whom we believe offers divine guidance. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try walking down the barefoot Ashifumi Road—a unique pathway paved with smooth river stones designed to stimulate your foot acupressure points for a quick health boost!
Renkeiji Temple
We conclude the tour at the historic Renkeiji Temple. This popular Buddhist temple was founded in the year 1549. On the temple porch, we’ll see Obinzuru-sama, a beautiful, hand-carved wooden statue. Local folklore says if you gently rub a part of Obinzuru-sama’s body and touch the corresponding spot on your own, your physical ailments will be healed!
