Giant Wooden Torii Gate

Stand beneath one of the tallest wooden Shinto gates in Japan. Towering at 15 meters (49 feet ) tall, this majestic entrance features beautiful calligraphy written by the historic samurai commander Katsu Kaishu.

Torii Gate & Shinto Purification Rituals

Before crossing into the sacred ground, your guide will explain the cultural meaning of the Torii gate as a boundary between the everyday world and the spiritual realm. You will proceed to the Temizuya (Water Purification Font), where your guide will demonstrate the elegant, traditional step-by-step method of using a bamboo ladle to wash your hands and mouth to purify your nature as a gesture of respect to the enshrined spirits.

The Main Hall

We make our way to the Main Hall and learn the proper Shinto manners—the sequence of bowing twice, clapping twice, and bowing once more—so you can confidently offer your prayers for love, relationship harmony, or new connections. We will walk around the exterior of the main sanctuary to admire the incredibly detailed wooden carvings, which were skilfully hand-carved over a span 7 years by legendary master carver Shimamura Genzo.

Fishing for Tai-Mikuji Fortunes

You can participate in one of the most enjoyable, interactive highlights of the shrine: Tai-Mikuji fortuntelling! You will get to pick up a small bamboo rod and “fish” your very own fortune out of a wooden pool filled with red and pink wooden sea bream (the traditional symbol of good luck and matchmaking in Japan).

Ema Tunnel & the 500-Year-Old Sacred Trees

We step into the iconic Ema Tunnel, a quiet, wooden archway beautifully crowded with thousands of prayer plaques. It is an incredibly photogenic spot where the filtered sunlight creates a wonderful, spiritual atmosphere. Many of these plaques are written by visitors wishing for happy marriages, finding their ideal partner, or maintaining strong bonds with loved ones. Right beside the tunnel, we will pay our respects to the two massive Goshinboku (Sacred Zelkova Trees). Your guide will show you how to walk a traditional figure-eight path around the giant, moss-softened roots to feel connected to nature.

Dissolving Bad Karma (Hitogata Nagashi)

We will proceed to the sacred purification stream flowing quietly through the shrine grounds to experience Hitogata Nagashi. Your guide will show you how to perform this ancient purification ritual: you will rub a human-shaped paper doll (Hitogata) over your chest and shoulders to transfer any physical ailments or negative energies, breathe onto it three times, and gently float it down the stream. As the paper dissolves, it symbolizes the clearing away of bad karma and bad luck to make room for fresh blessings.
