Introduction
On Tuesday, May 5, 2026 (National Holiday), the streets of Kawagoe came alive with yokai — Japanese supernatural creatures from folklore. The Kawagoe Yokai Town Walk 2026 (川越妖怪まち歩き) turned the historic town into a fun, slightly spooky playground for one day.Hundreds of participants, many in full yokai costume, wandered the traditional streets, blending perfectly with Kawagoe’s old-Edo atmosphere.
What Happened at the 2026 Event
The event ran from 11:00 to 18:00, centered around Hatago COEDOYA in Renjaku-cho.
Main Highlights:
Yokai Stamp Rally (11:00 – 15:30)
Participants collected stamps from various locations while exploring the town. Completing the rally offered chances to win prizes.
Yokai Makeup & Costume Experience (11:00 – 15:00)
Many visitors got professional yokai makeovers — from cute foxes and cats to classic ghosts and demons. The results made for fantastic photos!
Kawagoe Hyakki Yagyo (Night Parade of 100 Demons) (~16:30 – 17:30)
The grand finale! Over 100 yokai paraded through the streets as dusk fell. This was the most spectacular and photogenic part of the day.
Food Stalls & Market
Yokai-themed goods, local Kawagoe snacks, and festive atmosphere kept the energy high all day.
